As we prepare for the upcoming Next Generation in Trucking Train the Trainer event in June I can’t help to feel a sense of gratitude. When we started the PHS program eight years ago our focus was to ensure our graduates have long, healthy careers and instill in them the leadership qualities that would elevate them from being a driver to a professional driver. Although that focus has not changed, the program has evolved over the years and it is such an honor to be able to share the knowledge that I learned with those who will be starting programs.
It is essential that as the Next Generation in Trucking Association influence spreads across the US that the NGT brand represents the highest level and quality in curriculum standards. We are excited to announce that the PHS/Next Gen in Trucking course has just received University of California college level entrance requirement status for an elective course. This means the PHS/Next Gen course content met or exceeded college level standards. To qualify a program must demonstrate the following:
- Be academically challenging.
- Involve substantial reading and writing.
- Include problem-solving and laboratory work, as appropriate.
- Show serious attention to analytical thinking and research skills
- Develop students’ oral and listening skills.
- Incorporate learning to develop skills and cultivate interest in the academic enterprise
What makes this program so unique is that it is not just teaching someone to drive a truck, but it’s more about preparing someone to be successful as they enter into this industry. We want our graduates to be great future leaders with moral character and integrity as they will ultimately be guiding the next generation that will be following in their footsteps. The NGT Train the Trainer event will guide the next generation of high school instructors on the “hows” and “whys” of the NGT model and instill in them the confidence to further the NGT mission. As iron sharpens iron our NGT instructors will play a pivotal role in the future of our industry. Thank you to those who support these instructors and are giving them this opportunity to attend this training event.
Patterson High School CTE Thank You Banquet
Patterson High School recently hosted their end of the year CTE Thank You Banquet in celebration of our amazing industry partners. What made this event so special was hearing the students’ personal stories how these programs impacted their lives. Programs such as these are not only changing lives, they are redefining what a successful educational model looks like.

Trucking Gives Back
A group of students from the Patterson High School program volunteered to be judges at this year’s California Truck Driving Championship held in West Sacramento. Special thanks to the California Trucking Association and CTA President, Eric Sauer, for always including and finding opportunities to keep our students connected. Also special thanks to FedEx Freight for welcoming students and making them feel as part of the FedEx Freight family.
