How to Get Your CDL:
Simple Steps to Get Started

Here’s the correct order most students follow:

  1. You need to get your CLP. Study the CDL manual → access your state’s CDL manual here. Some schools offer CLP Prep Courses.
  2. Get DOT Physical & DOT Drug Screen → receive DOT Medical Card
  3. Take written test at DMV → receive CLP
  4. Enroll in CDL school (they’ll require your medical card) → find a school near you here https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Search
  5. Complete ELDT training
  6. Take CDL skills test
  7. Get your CDL!
