Congratulations to Trentyn Baker, Nelson County Area Technology Center
Teacher: Scott Thompson, Heavy Equipment Sciences & ELDT Instructor
The Next Generation in Trucking is proud to recognize Trentyn Baker as our Student of the Month for September 2025!
From a young age, Trentyn was inspired by his dad and grandfather, riding along with them in trucks and watching their work in action. That early influence sparked his passion for trucking, and today he’s pursuing a path toward earning his CDL and building a career in hauling heavy equipment and general freight.
Trentyn’s favorite part of the program so far has been learning about trucks hands-on, especially using the Advanced Training Systems Driving Simulator. “It’s still early in the program, but I’m already learning so much,” he shared. He’s particularly proud of mastering new skills, including driving a manual transmission—something he had never done before. His advice to other students considering the program? “Definitely do it if you have any interest—this is something you can use for the rest of your life.”
Teacher’s Perspective
Scott Thompson, Heavy Equipment Sciences & ELDT teacher, shared how proud he is of Trentyn:
“Trentyn has completed two years in my Heavy Equipment Sciences class and earned an apprenticeship with IUOE Local 181 in Boston, KY. He’s excelled in all aspects of the program and is now doing very well in CDL Class A theory. He continually surprises me with his knowledge retention, understanding, and common-sense approach. I’m excited to see where his career takes him.”
Mr. Thompson also reflected on launching the program:
“When we started Heavy Equipment Sciences, I couldn’t imagine how CDL-ELDT would come together, but with guidance and support, it became a reality. This program bridges the skills gap in trucking and sets our students up for success.”
He added that Generation Z brings unique strengths to the industry—strong tech skills, social awareness, and a commitment to inclusivity—while also challenging educators and employers to adapt to new communication styles and expectations.
👏 Congratulations again to Trentyn on this recognition! His dedication, determination, and passion for trucking represent exactly what the Next Generation in Trucking is all about.
