We’re proud to recognize Anthony Simms as our Student of the Month! Anthony’s passion, leadership, and commitment to learning make him a standout in the Diesel Technology program at Lincoln Tech.
Anthony has a natural talent for tackling tough challenges—especially solving difficult faults in trucks that others might walk away from. He consistently works hard to bring his team to the finish line on every project, demonstrating exceptional skill, professionalism, and leadership. Currently at the top of his class, Anthony is always looking for new information on different manufacturers and is eager to find an employer who will help him grow his career in the diesel field. He also gives back to the program by speaking to prospective students during campus visits, sharing his experiences and inspiring the next generation of technicians.
Anthony is currently studying at Lincoln Technical Institute, one of our valued Next Generation in Trucking Association Members. Their commitment to hands-on training is helping students like Anthony gain the skills and confidence needed for successful careers in the diesel and trucking industries.
In His Own Words:
What inspired you to pursue a career as a diesel mechanic?
“What inspires me to pursue a career as a Diesel Mechanic is my strong passion for vehicles—especially cars. I’ve always been fascinated by how vehicles work, but I want to take that curiosity further by learning everything inside and out, particularly in diagnosing and fixing complex mechanical issues. I enjoy problem-solving and working with my hands, and becoming a diesel mechanic allows me to combine those interests. This career path gives me the opportunity to grow my skills, work with advanced technology, and contribute to something essential in everyday life.”
What has been your favorite part of the program so far?
“My favorite part of the program so far has been the hands-on work in the shop. Getting the opportunity to work directly with tools and equipment has really helped me understand the practical side of diesel mechanics. I enjoy learning different techniques and using new tools that I’ve never seen before—it’s exciting to apply what we’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations. This hands-on experience is invaluable because it builds my confidence and skills, and it makes the learning process much more engaging and rewarding.”
What advice would you give to other students thinking about joining this program?
“If you’re thinking about joining this program, I’d say go for it! Even if you’re not initially interested in diesel mechanics, like me, you might find that you learn to enjoy it as you get deeper into the program. My advice is to stay curious—ask lots of questions whenever you’re unsure or want to learn more. Also, make sure to stay on top of your work and practice your skills. The more effort you put in, the more rewarding the experience will be. This program offers great hands-on learning opportunities, so be open-minded and take full advantage of everything it has to offer.”
How do you see trucking fitting into your future career goals?
“I feel like trucking fits well into my future career goals because it opens up a lot of opportunities to find a good-paying job without feeling stuck in one place. The trucking industry is always in demand, and it offers flexibility and a chance to travel, which I find appealing. Also, my father works in the trucking industry, so I’ve grown up around it and developed an interest in trying it out for myself. Combining my skills as a diesel mechanic with trucking could give me a strong foundation for a stable and rewarding career.”
Is there a moment or accomplishment you’re most proud of in this program?
“I would say my favorite accomplishment so far has been taking apart a truck engine and rebuilding it again within just five weeks. It was challenging but rewarding to see the engine come back together and know that I had the skills and patience to complete the whole process. Another moment I’m proud of is being chosen by Lincoln Tech to assist employers during the Career Fair. It was a great opportunity to represent the program, connect with professionals, and develop my communication skills. Both experiences have been something I am very proud of.”
